Faced with pandemic-related attendance restrictions at events coming into the 2020-2021 school year, Western Kentucky University needed a way to provide students with a fair opportunity to obtain tickets for football and men’s basketball games. To achieve this, they turned to SuperFan for help.
To accomodate limitations during the Hilltoppers football season, any student with a valid WKU student email could RSVP for individual games using the Red Wave app, created by SuperFan. The school could place a limit on the number of students who could reserve a ticket. If a person rescinded their ticket, it could be given to someone who had opted to be placed on a holding list. This ensured that they would be abiding by limited capacity restrictions, but that all students had a fair chance of attending a football game.
During the men’s basketball season, students entered a ticket lottery on the Red Wave app. Using the reports feature of the SuperFan platform, 150 students from the lottery were randomly selected to receive a game RSVP. This was repeated for each home game.
Since students were required to use the Red Wave app to get tickets for each of these sports, Western Kentucky saw a large increase in app users. From September 2020 to the end of January 2021, there was a 66% increase in app registrations, equal to approximately 18% of the total student body. There was also an increase in check-ins at events. Compared to the 2019-2020 school year, the 2020-2021 year has experienced a 48% increase in check-ins per event.
Working with Superfan, Western Kentucky University used their Red Wave app to provide students with an equal opportunity to attend two of the school’s most popular sports. Now a much larger portion of the campus population is using the app, giving them the opportunity to further engage with and increase communication with their students.
